If art is able to instantly provoke strong emotions and complex ideas, it is definitely amazing art. Zach Johnson does exactly this kind of thing. The perfectly frozen dynamic of his Acid Over Easy series is just one great example. Beside many illustrations, paintings and gallery projects, the man from Portland is also responsible for quite a number of sweet product designs, like T-Shirts, kite- or snow boards.
Marvellous news: Jack Sparrow and Ruckspin, two of my favourite producers at the moment, teamed up for a new project named Author. This live record of a session the two of them had in Leeds reveals a very jazzy, eclectic, experimental and deep approach towards Bass music and sophisticated Electronics. I’m very excited for their album, which is scheduled for late 2011.
This video brought to my mind once again the thought: “Damn, you really should visit Burning Man next year!”
The amazing little flick was shot by Elite Force, who obviously had a hell of a good time in Black Rock Desert. I just had a hell of a good time listening to a 3-hour record of one of the sets he played in Nutz Camp out there:
Paul Rose, mastermind of Hotflush Recordings and go-getting producer, will join the legendary DJ Kicks series under his well-known moniker Scuba. A glance at the track list promises a mixture of various UK Dubstep sounds and some technoish Post-Dubstep productions. Quite some unreleased music in there plus composition and mixing skills that need no futher description make this release on !K7 definitely one to watch out for end of October!
Psy Trance still is surprising and amazing. I was re-assured of that while listening and going completely bananas to the live set of Captain Hook at this year’s Indian Spirit Festival. The member of the popular project Quantize mixes styles and rhythm concepts in an amazingly unpredictable, fresh and thrilling way. Progressive Psy Trance is the main theme, but also there are fantastic Wobbles and Dubsteps, quotes of Electro House and even sharp Acid riffs from oldschool Goa. Everything produced absolutely high-end. Served on a Funktion One sound system, a terrific music experience. While his tracks are very good, his live set as a composition was absolutely excellent – go for it, if you get the chance! I don’t think Captain Hook will found a new school in the Trance scene, rather he might be an amazing stand-alone phenomenon like Spirallianz / Midi Miliz used to be 10 years ago.
Almost forgot to upload the current issue of mushroom magazine. This time it comes with a beautiful cover by Nita Kravits which was changed last-minute so my article about the Ukrainian artist actually refers to another one. Also I wrote about the meaning of the Om, laid-back sounds for laid-back listeners and a number of artists and festivals. Tom Rom contributed a nice essay about sex in the Trance scene and finally there is an extensive report about the blooming underground scene of the Balkans region.
A highly explosive mash-up of classic House elements, sharp Electro leads, Wobbles and Breaks, including quite some of the notorious ReVamps of Elite Force himself.
