Star producer Deadmau5 shows courage and proclaims an unconvenient truth: We all hit play. It’s a very provocative blog article about IDM live acts, probably the most controversial part being his scornful comment on beat matching skills. Of course there are many DJs out there who desperately cling to the belief that their vast vinyl collection and their genuine beat matching skills will make them stand out from the ever growing noise of laptop and iPhone Djs. Blended with a proper pinch of envy they proclaim mister Deadmau5 to be a moron… however, he has the bookings, the money and the fanbase all those people are craving for.

Funktion One founder Tony Andrews gives a speech about the crucial importance of our sense of hearing, how low quality audio affects the listener’s mind, the loudness war, distortion and how to save the world… by simply listening to good music!

Adam Andaluz, also known as 50% of Alic and co-founder of Digital Diamonds, stroke while the iron was still hot and recorded this excellent mix in the aftermath of this year’s Sonar Festival. Obviously inspired by the rich variety of sounds of rhythms, it comes with lots of broken beats, experimental sound structures, deep atmopsheres and melodic crescendos, everything merged into a seamless flow. All thumbs up!

It’s said that the actual sculpture is waiting already inside the rock – the job of the artist is just to scrape it out. Alexandre Farto aka Vhils applies this principle on walls. Carefully scraping off plaster and color, he creates amazing pictures which look like a mysterious product of weathering.

Another free tune from Mister Pura Vida: The unmistakable Guts groove meets the melancholic singing of Miriam Makeba.

The best act I heard at this year’s Sonar festival in Barcelona: Darkside. Nicolas Jaar, incredible 22 years young only, playing synthesizers and samplers, having a live jam session with guitarist Dave Harrington. Together they created a super complex, deep and psychedelic build up, stacking light grooves and sophisticated melodies, eventually escalating into danceable rhythms. A truely mind-blowing listening experience!
