The new mushroom magazine is out! this time I had interviews with Kukan Dub Lagan and Interchill Records, both are giving away for free great Chill Out / Ambient music. Also I wrote a comment on the European meat adulteration scandal, some funny notes about the culture of alcohol, and I had many more interviews, for instance with Sonic Species, Future Frequency, and Meller.

The latest edition of mushroom magazine comes with a stylish cover by Mateo with whom I had a really great interview. Also I started a new column, wondering actually how do commerce critics make their money? Quite a nice mixture in this mag, many small and funny articles instead of the usual big artist- / label-related lead article.

Mushroom magazine turns 18 years this month, and as it should be for such a great aniversary the new edition is extensive like it has not been since many, many years: 128 pages full of the newest DJ & studio technology, fashion, and heaps of open air festivals, of course. Also I had an interview with surrealist Naoto Hattori, who contributed a really sweet cover picture. Check out the digital version or get your hands on the print version at all the big open airs!
The new mushroom magazine is finished! The publication cycle changed, it now comes on each odd month. Also, the pages underwent a nice re-design. Some topics: Netlabels, lots of summer festivals and an extensive drugstore section.
Mit der Biografie Albert Hofmann und sein LSD ist den Autoren Dieter Hagenbach und Lucius Werthmüller ein Spagat zwischen wissenschaftlicher Dokumentation und kurzweiligem Lesegenuss gelungen. Neben seiner bemerkenswerten Informationsfülle zeichnet sich das Werk durch überaus ansprechende Gestaltung aus, zahlreiche Bilder lockern den Text auf und reichern ihn gleichzeitig an.
Kaum hatte ich das Buch in der Hand, zog mich seine Aufmachung in ihren Bann. Unzählige Fotos aus dem Privatleben des berühmten Chemikers, von seinen Zusammenkünften mit intellektuellen Persönlichkeiten, seinen Reisen, sogar ein Schnappschuss vom jungen Hofmann auf einer Studentenfete und viele, viele Jahre später mit einem Joint in der Hand auf einer Psytrance Party… Allein das Bildmaterial ist einzigartig und erzählt eine spannende Geschichte. Zusammen mit kleinen, am Seitenrand eingestreuten Zitaten bleibt die Lektüre stets lebendig.
Der Biografietext dokumentiert nicht nur detailliert den beruflichen Werdegang des Chemikers und die vielfältigen Aspekte seines öffentlichen Lebens als Forscher und Intellektueller. Parallel wird auch sein Privat- und Familienleben von Geburt bis Tod beleuchtet, wodurch sich eine authentische Perspektive auf den Menschen Albert Hofmann eröffnet.
Ausgehend von seiner Forschung dokumentiert die Biografie zudem den Einfluss, den die Entdeckung von LSD und Psilocybin auf fast alle Bereiche des gesellschaftlichen Lebens hatte und immer noch hat: Psychologie, Soziologie, Philosophie und Kunst sind in dieser Hinsicht besondere Schwerpunkte, die anhand der Arbeit ihrer jeweiligen Protagonisten ausführlich dargestellt sind. Auch die Bedeutung der Geheimdienste, der militärischen Experimente und der LSD-Produktion im Untergrund wird aufgezeigt.
Zusammenfassend kann ich Albert Hofmann und sein LSD allen thematisch interessierten ausdrücklich empfehlen. In Text und Bild liefert das Werk unglaublich vielseitige Informationen und Hintergründe und gleichzeitig ein spannendes Leseerlebnis.

The new mushroom magazine is out! This time it includes heaps of artist features for the upcoming Freakplanet Tour. I had interesting interviews with jack of all trades Chris Zippel, S.U.N. Project, black light bodypainting master Wolf and the Psytrance veterans O.O.O.D., just to name a few. Also, mushroom had a little interview with me, in which I tried to explain my Hedonistic Freelancer philosophy.
Stuff White People Like deals with the status symbols and strict social codes of a supposedly alternative lifestyle. In altogether 150 very short, put-in-a-nutshell chapters, Christian Lander explains the meaning of Apple Products, Organic Food, Knowing Best What’s Good For Poor People, Natural Medicine, Hating Corporations and much more. He does so in a hilarious way, perfectly caricaturing the double standard that characterizes the lifestyle of so many white people. More than once I had to laugh out loud, even when I found myself in the one or the other chapter. Which again was no surprise, see 103: Self-deprecating humor.
The book has many parallels to Ich werde ein Berliner – How to be a really hip German by Wash Echte, but then again it’s very different. First of all, it explicitly aims the US American society, some items like e.g. Wrigley Field or Noam Chomsky are obviously not quite usual for Europeans. However, most subjects are international. Second, the chapters are really short, actually they are points only. A great feature because you can read just 1 or 2 items in a few minutes or 30 in a row. Last but not least the English language comes with another wit, another groove, another logic than German which is very refreshing. Big ups for Stuff White People Like, I recommend this book! By the way, another parallel to the mysterious Wash Echte: Also Christian Lander runs a blog, definitely worth a peek!
